The first thing to do is be prepared. Nothing looks worse than going into an interview and having no idea what the company does or what type of position the person would like to gain. Do the necessary research on the company the interview is with, and know what position would be best suited for that company. The person should be able to discuss and skills or qualifications that will make them the right choice for the job. Be prepared to answer the trickiest questions employers throw at prospective employees such as, “Why should I hire you”? That is a toughie, right? Not if the person knows what they have to offer. It may even seem hokey, but practicing an interview can uncover any weaknesses that may need to be worked on before the actual day.
No matter what the person may think it sounds like, be dressed to impress. Visuals help people to remember more than any other sense. So, come into an interview with a visual that says professional. Attire should always be professional for interviews no matter what the position is. It does not matter if people in the office typically wear casual wear. The interview is the place for stepping it up about five notches.
Know what items will be needed for the interview and have them ready. Most places will require a social security card and some form of government-issued identification. It is a good idea for the person to have a copy of their resume. Also having a few recommendations is a good thing to bring along. Some employers will even require that the individual bring a copy of their transcript.
On the day of the interview, it is important to be early, so the person should make sure ahead of time to know what the route looks like between their home and the place of the interview. Already know the name of the person that will be doing the interview and greet them with their name and a firm handshake. Just relax and answer every question with the clearest answers and give examples where possible. Also, make sure to avoid slang at all costs. Use body language to show interest and ask questions to show eagerness, unless the answers were already made available elsewhere. Do not ask questions about salary before a position is even offered. At the end of the interview make sure to shake hands and thank the person for being able to do the interview. Send a thank you note immediately after to show courtesy and remind the interviewer who you are.
